MSP vs in-house IT for Texas operators

Split standing load from design work. A Houston-area mid-market does not need a national portal — or a single hero employee — to cover both.

The wrong question

Texas mid-market operators often ask whether they should “get an MSP” or “hire a person.” That framing hides the actual decision: which work is standing load (patching, backups, identity hygiene, ticket triage) and which work is design (a fabric refresh, a colo move, a PCI gap, an OT network that must not share a VLAN with accounting).

An in-house generalist who is good will still be a bottleneck the week the core switch dies and the ERP owner wants MFA the same afternoon. A generic MSP that only knows how to reset Microsoft 365 licenses will smile through a plant cutover and then open a severity-3 ticket with a vendor they do not understand.

What in-house is for

Keep in-house the people who know your politics, your bad cable plant, and which pump skid cannot take a reboot on Friday. They should own identity basics, endpoint hygiene, and the relationship with the business. They should not be expected to be a CCIE, a HIPAA evidence factory, and a Teams Rooms integrator in the same salary band.

What a specialist MSP/VAR is for

Use a firm that will sell you the hardware, draw the diagram, and remain on the pager for the parts they designed. That is different from a national MSP logo that subcontracts everything behind a portal. Ask who shows up for the change window. Ask whether they will tell you not to buy a tool.

ianAsher’s bias, from Montgomery and the Houston market: retain a named engineer for operate/optimize, run projects as projects, and do not pretend a helpdesk is a network practice. If your in-house person is strong, we will work under them. If you do not have one, we will say so before we take a retainer that requires a local owner.

A practical split

  • In-house: identity, laptops, “the printer,” vendor coordination you already know.
  • Contract: campus/WAN/Wi-Fi design, firewall evidence for PCI or HIPAA, colo, SCADA-adjacent segmentation, Teams rooms.
  • Shared: backups and logging — pick an owner, write it down, test restores.

If a sales deck uses “AI-powered SOC” more than it uses “as-built,” keep shopping.
